UK Linguistic Courses
Introduction to Linguistics
Linguistics is the study of language, from the small – how sentences are constructed – to the large – how language can influence and direct. A keen analytical mind is required as students learn about the sound, grammar and meaning of different languages, spoken by different people and cultures. Topics range from the analysis within areas of advertising and marketing to the political rhetoric of world leaders, and students will learn the most effective ways of looking at and dissecting language.
Most Linguistic courses last three years, with joint-honours also available and a popular option. This enables students to study the analysis of language with Linguistics, alongside subjects such as mathematics, marketing and translation.
SI-UK is here to help with your Linguistics application. Get started today and arrange your free consultation at an SI-UK office or via Skype.
During the first year of study, students will be introduced to phonetics and phonology, syntax and sociolinguistics, before moving onto more complex subjects in the second and third year such as language acquisition, and difficulty in learning language through age.
Careers in Linguistics
Linguistic graduates can move into speech and language therapy, translation, and teaching English as a first or foreign language. The analytical skills picked up are also adaptable to other professions, giving a broad landscape of possible career avenues.
Entry Requirements for Linguistics
English, Maths and Science subjects are preferred. For international students wishing to study Linguistics, an IELTS score of no less than 6.5 across all four categories - reading, writing, speaking and listening – with an overall 7.0 score is generally required at most universities.
