Overview

The International Education Institute (IE) at the University of St Andrews offers a range of high quality university preparation programmes and Summer school courses for international students. We also offer Masters programmes in TESOL (on-campus and distance-learning) and pre-sessional courses.

Foundation programmes

University of St Andrews’ International Education Institute (IE) offers a variety of international year one and university foundation programmes for international students with both September and January start dates. The international foundation programmes at St Andrews are:

  • Business – Management, Economics & Finance
  • Social Sciences & Humanities
  • Science
  • Pathway to Medicine
  • Medicine

These programmes include academic English, subject-specific content, and orientation to higher education study in the UK. They are designed to prepare students for success in an undergraduate degree at St Andrews, or any UK university.

Summer School Courses

The Summer Academic Experience Courses (SAEC) offer pupils from around the world the unique opportunity to experience courses taught in the Scottish academic tradition by current academic staff. Students will get to study an academic subject of their choice, whilst also developing their academic research and writing skills. Experiencing a real taster of university life, Summer students have access to our world-class facilities: they have their own student ID card, stay in University accommodation and are taught by university staff across the following range of courses:

Masters Programmes in TESOL

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) includes a wide range of specialisms and has global relevance. In order to support the career ambitions of aspiring and existing TESOL practitioners, the University of St Andrews offers a variety of programmes, including on-campus and distance learning, full time and part time, and full degrees or single modules. In studying TESOL at the University of St Andrews, you will become part of a community of experienced practitioners and postgraduate students with a wide range of teaching backgrounds

Pre-sessional Courses

The International Education Institute provides two pre-sessional courses for students who use English as an additional language and who have an offer to study at the University:

Pre-sessional courses take place during the July to September period and involve around 20 hours of class time per week, Monday to Friday. They provide an excellent orientation to the University and enable students to develop:

  • language knowledge and academic literacy
  • attributes of reflectiveness, criticality, autonomy, confidence and academic integrity
  • critical analysis skills and the ability to incorporate sources and evidence in academic work
  • knowledge of academic and discipline-specific conventions
  • familiarity with institutional services, processes, and forms of assessment

Breckett Front   My counsellor contacted me every day throughout the application process and helped me receive an unconditional offer. I am so grateful to SI-UK and will never forget them. I will study very hard as I feel this is the best reward I can give the whole team.  Breckett Front
